Frequently asked questions
Does Rune Wyvern come with a subscription?
No. It's a one-time purchase. Your copy never stops working. No monthly bill for the core product, ever.
But you might require a subscription for a future, cloud-based, additional feature?
Cloud-based services don't pay for themselves. No such feature is planned for the near future. But if one arrives, it will require a recurring fee.
What will Rune Wyvern cost?
The plan is a single one-time price, aimed under $50.
Will there be paid DLC?
Possibly. Some larger future features might arrive later as optional add-ons. The core product remains one purchase, and you'll never need an add-on to keep using what you already bought.
Does Rune Wyvern have AI features?
There's no built-in AI. Rune Wyvern is built to support plugins, so AI tools could be added as an optional plugin later, by the community most likely.
Will Rune Wyvern ship with AI-generated content?
No text or artwork will be AI-generated. I do use AI tools when programming Wyvern.
I like AI-generated content. Will my AI be able to produce content for Wyvern?
Yes. The format used in the *.wyvern files is simple enough for a human to understand. An AI can pick it up quickly.
Does Rune Wyvern upload any data to a remote server?
None of your content, and never without permission. Anonymized analytics and bug reports might be included in the product, but you'll have to approve those.
Where will it be released?
The intention is to release on Steam, for Windows, macOS, and Linux.
Will there be a mobile version?
A mobile version is being considered, but it's not yet clear when it will land on the roadmap, nor exactly what it would be able to do.
Do I need an internet connection or an account?
No. Rune Wyvern works fully offline and needs no account. It runs on your machine.
Will my files be hosted online?
There's no built-in cloud service at launch, so no. Your files live on your own machine. Because Rune Wyvern just reads and writes ordinary files, you can keep them in any folder that appears on your filesystem, including a cloud-sync folder such as Dropbox, OneDrive or Google Drive, wherever that service provides one for your platform.
Do I need high-end hardware to run Rune Wyvern?
No, the core application is built to be pretty lightweight.
Which game system does Rune Wyvern support?
It's system-agnostic. You, or someone else, can define content and rules, build statblocks, sheets and editors. You can even produce content that ends up in more than one RPG system.
What content does Rune Wyvern ship with?
It ships with open, freely licensed starter content for the two most popular systems, D&D 5e and Pathfinder 2e. If you play either of those systems, you'll have real material to build on from day one. And if not, you can use that content as an example for how to model your own content.
Will there be a digital dice tray?
I will look into that!
Can I use my content in my favorite virtual tabletop?
Not out of the box. I won't have the time to build that support myself, there are simply too many combinations. But I do intend to provide the tools, such as plugins, that will allow a community to enable it.
Can I use other media, like audio, video, tokens, battle maps and world maps?
Text and images, yes. I cannot promise that you'll be able to embed all other media into any note or document, at least not from the start. Subscribe to the newsletter to stay updated.
Is it open source?
The app itself is a commercial product. The source code remains closed. But your content is yours to do with as you wish, and Rune Wyvern will ship with the tools to embed it into your own software.
Can my players use it without buying a copy?
No. Players who want to actively collaborate will need their own copy of Rune Wyvern.
When will it launch?
The plan is to launch in early access in autumn 2027, on Steam. It is in active development. Subscribe for more updates!
Can I see Rune Wyvern in action?
Not yet, and that is deliberate. I'm eager to show Rune Wyvern once the application and its editors are mature enough! With only the wyvern engine (almost) completed however, a demo today would only sell it short. A public video demonstration is planned for the first half of 2027, and it's on the roadmap. Subscribe to the newsletter to stay informed.
Will there be playtesting?
Yes. How and with whom remains to be seen.
I am a professional content creator. Can I use Rune Wyvern to design my books?
Not at launch. Though you will be able to print the produced HTML pages, true native PDF export is currently planned for the full release. And then it will come with a dedicated editor for PDF layout.
Will Rune Wyvern ever become a virtual tabletop?
That is not the intention. But as it grows, the app will become more useful for building VTT content.
You are promising quite a lot! Are you sure you're up to the task?
Yes. Not saying that it won't be a ton of work, and some trial and error along the way, but technically it's doable. You are right to be skeptical though. Then again, if you find the concept enticing, you have nothing to lose by subscribing to the newsletter!
What's with the logo?
Glad you like it! Seriously though, I am not a professional artist, and there is no use trying to pose as one. That being said, I have contacted someone who does have the skills to provide new and far more impressive artwork. Be patient!
Rune Wyvern, why that name?
I called my software 'wyvern' because I thought it was a cool name. A little wyvern may not be as impressive as a dragon, but a dragon is a hard beast to deal with, and I want this product to be as user-friendly as possible! And since the name 'wyvern' is just a little too generic, and I really didn't want to replace it with something else, I decided to make this one hoard precious lore. And what better script to use than the runic alphabet?
